Project promoted to global audience

20 Jan 2021

A global festival focused on solutions to fast-track industrial decarbonisation will hear about Humber Zero’s progress and ambitions.

Project director Jonathan Briggs has been invited to address the three-day Decarb Connect Digital Festival.

It will bring together industrialists, investors, policy makers, game-changing technologies and innovators. The event aims to inspire stakeholders to rise to the net zero challenge.

Humber Zero will remove 8 million tonnes per annum of carbon from the atmosphere and transport it via pipeline to empty gas fields in the North Sea or export it for commercial use.

The Phillips 66 Humber Refinery and Vitol-owned combined heat and power plant VPI Immingham, part of the industrial site at Immingham and pictured above, are behind the project.

Jonathan will speak on Wednesday (27th January) in the Coastal Clusters Project Updates session.

He said: “It’s another great opportunity to spread the word about what we are doing in this corner of the UK.

“Humber Zero presents an opportunity to be a global leader in carbon capture and storage.

“That is recognised across the decarbonisation sector and why colleagues from across the world want to hear about our progress.”

He will be joined on the panel by representatives from projects in Rotterdam and Teesside, in the north east of England.

“We are all at different stages. The session will be an interesting insight into those other projects as well as an opportunity to update on what is happening on the Humber.

“The wider three-day festival has a host of speakers from across the world, many either responsible for an industrial net zero strategy or for implementing one.”

Humber Zero will make a significant contribution to the Government’s target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Carbon capture and storage was one of the pillars in the Prime Minister’s ten-point plan for a green industrial revolution, announced in November.

Humber Zero, awaiting news on whether it has been successful in Innovate UK’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund Phase II, is ready to start.

It will create 2500 construction jobs, 200 permanent roles and protect 20,000 jobs in the region.

Humber Zero’s location makes it an ideal gateway project for large-scale decarbonisation in the wider Humber region.

The cluster is 1km from the port of Immingham, close to vital CCS transmission infrastructure into the North Sea and positioned along a key pipeline route identified by National Grid to connect and decarbonise industry.
